Stefan Sagmeister, the renowned graphic designer, has left an indelible mark on the industry with his innovative and captivating designs. Born in Austria and now residing in New York City, he has worked with iconic musicians such as Lou Reed, OK Go, The Rolling Stones, and David Byrne, creating captivating album covers that have become timeless pieces of art.
The Path to Design Brilliance
Sagmeister’s journey into the world of design began unexpectedly. Despite initially training in engineering, his true passion for design was ignited when he started illustrating articles for an Australian magazine called “Alphorn” at the age of 15. This experience paved the way for his future as a creative force.
At 19, Sagmeister moved to Vienna with aspirations of studying graphic design at a prestigious university. However, he faced rejection due to his own self-doubt, believing that anyone could draw better than him. Undeterred, he enrolled in a private art school and forged his own path to success.
Sagmeister studied graphic design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna before receiving a Fulbright scholarship to study at the renowned Pratt Institute in New York. These experiences shaped his artistic perspective and laid the foundation for his future accomplishments.
Pioneering Design
Following his time with the Leo Burnett design team in Hong Kong and his collaboration with the design firm Tibor Kalman in New York, Sagmeister founded his own company, Sagmeister Inc., in 1993. Since its inception, the company has been at the forefront of branding, graphics, and packaging design for clients ranging from The Rolling Stones and HBO to museums like the Guggenheim and Time Warner.
What sets Sagmeister apart is his unique approach to running his company. Every seven years, he closes Sagmeister Inc. for a full year, allowing all employees the chance to rest and rejuvenate their creativity. This unorthodox practice has led to an exceptional level of innovation and originality in the studio’s designs.
A Multifaceted Artist
In addition to his work as a graphic designer, Sagmeister has forged artistic partnerships with music legends like David Byrne and Lou Reed. He has authored the monograph “Make You Look,” published by Booth-Clibborn, and has shared his expertise through teaching positions at the New York School of Visual Arts and the Cooper Union School of the Arts.
Sagmeister’s dedication to various art forms is evident in his diverse portfolio. He devotes 25% of his artwork to the music industry, while another 25% is dedicated to the art world, including books and publications for galleries. The remaining 50% is focused on social issues and other scientific endeavors, allowing him to explore a wide range of creative avenues.
Recognitions and Accolades
Sagmeister’s exceptional talent and contributions have not gone unnoticed within the industry. He is a two-time recipient of the prestigious Grammy Award, with his designs for Talking Heads and David Byrne and Brian Eno’s collaboration “Everything That Happens Will Happen Today” earning widespread acclaim.
In 2005, Sagmeister also received the “National Communications Design Award” from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. His client list includes renowned names such as Aiga Detroit, Anni Kuan Design, Publishing Stand Clibborn, Capitol Records, Chaumont, Dai Nippon Printing Company, and the Guggenheim Museum.
Inspiring Exhibitions and Unforgettable Designs
Sagmeister’s work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions held at prominent locations around the world, including Zurich, Vienna, New York, Berlin, Japan, Osaka, Prague, Cologne, and Seoul. His creations have captured the imagination of art enthusiasts and designers alike, with his distinctive style leaving a lasting impression.
One of Sagmeister’s most notable works is the cover design for Lou Reed’s “Set the Twilight Reeling” album. This masterpiece, listed among the top 20 graphic designs worldwide, features a gray cover that gives the illusion of Reed’s portrait moving through different shades of light when turned.
