During her residency at Caravansarai, Joan often bought meat from the
local butcher. Fascinated by the cracks and folds which resembled the twisted streets of Perşembe Pazarı, she used charcoal to highlight the inherent topography.

Daring you to listen more closely, Joan played with the idea of a drum—something that normally is louder than other instruments. Like the neighborhood, a drum is boisterous, but, using hardware from the corner vendors she invites us to direct our ears past the obvious noise and into a moment of careful, quiet attention.
